Step 11 of 12 Step programs states "Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God as we understood God, praying only for knowledge of God's will for us and the power to carry that out"

The promise of step 11 is increased awareness of our spirituality and connection with a higher power. A fundamental process for that is meditation and mindfulness. For example, studies have shown that Mindfulness Meditation diminishes craving in substance abuse.
